MARRIAGE
Marriage is far more profound than our contemporary culture would lead us to believe. It is a life-long commitment that restrains self-centeredness, self-indulgence and self-gratification. It is the one relationship that effectively prepares and conditions us for community. By restraining self-centeredness and promoting love of another, marriage becomes the foundation for social order. The marriage represents the importance of the bond between a husband and wife in the Bhutanese context.

Marriage ceremony constitutes the following:
Gathering – A lot of people gather during a marriage ceremony. It is believed that more the number of people gathered, the better shall be the life of the newlyweds because everyone present is a well-wisher, and it brings lots of luck and good fortune to the couple.
Songs & Dances – Singing and dancing are a part of merrymaking. People sing and dance and laugh during marriage ceremonies in an effort to forget the painful memories and sufferings so that the couple will be blessed with happiness throughout their lives.
New Clothes – Wearing new and colorful clothes during marriage ceremonies is also an important part of the custom. It is believed that wearing new and expensive clothes during the occasion blesses the couple with a fruitful life. Wealth wise, they will be prosperous. The society will respect and honor them.
